Once upon a time this guy:
- Was his high school senior class president.
- Organized a teen club called The Attic in his hometown. He booked Fever Tree, The Clique, Bubble Puppy, The Boxtops and The Moving Sidewalks.
- Was in a rock band called Dogfood featuring Seab Meador. They played a concert at the State School for the Deaf.
- Opened for ZZ Top; the first public concert at Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, TX - 1971.
- Played bass with a folk group called Pilgrim in Kansas City, MO.
- Picked guitar all night with David Allen Coe in Nashville’s King of the Road Hotel where he heard Steve Goodman’s “You Never Even Call Me By My Name” before it was recorded.
- Used to regularly pick up hitchhiking songwriter/author Shel Silverstein on Music Row while he was “looking for a hit!” in Nashville, TN.
- Jammed with songwriter Steve (Seven Bridges Road) Young all night in Young’s apartment. Two nights later and three doors down he traded songs with Waylon Jennings, Larry Ballard and Linda Hargrove.
- First experienced snow skies in Ogden, Utah at the end of the season. He took a quick lesson and took off by himself. Then got stuck in a snow drift for almost two hours. The mountain was closed.
- Let REO Speedwagon use his hotel room to rehearse their opening set for Bruce Springsteen that night in Champaign, IL. They left cigarette butts, empty beer cans, and no backstage pass.
- Recorded his entire catalogue the day he left Nashville with members of Elvis Presley’s band. The session lasted four hours.
- Cut a new song, “Wrecked Again”, in a studio in Jackson, MS. The night before, Paul Simon, had recorded tracks for “Me and Julio” in that very studio. The waste basket was full of ‘fresh’ strings. Danny swiped them and used them for weeks.
- Lost both guitars (Guild 12-string and a LoPrinzi D-28) and a tape deck, ripped off, from his van in a parking lot in Jackson, MS.
- Was heading for California after a gig (Harry Starker’s) in Kansas City when he discovered his van and been robbed. All that remained was his cassette collection, a vintage Martin D-18, a signed 8X10 photo of Tammy Wynette and his college diploma. (The guitar was under a blanket.)
- Discovered that all his worldly possessions were stolen one night a year later while playing a gig in Houston, TX. All he had left was his guitar, that night’s gig money and the clothes on his back. At least 10 new song master copies recorded in Jackson and Nashville were lost.
- Was running through the Denver Airport to catch a plane and accidentally collided with and knocked down presidential hopeful, Henry “Scoop” Jackson while under Secret Service protection.
- Was the first band to play Rockefeller’s in Houston, TX.
- Was the first band to play Cody’s in Houston, TX.
- Was the last band to ever play Theodore’s in Houston, TX.
- Turned down an offer to tape Austin City Limits because it didn’t pay.
- Worked with Shake Russell, Mike Finnigan, Blaze Foley, Lucinda Williams, Uncle Walt’s Band, Dana Cooper, Sisters Morales, Bill Champlin, Saylor White, Johnny Lee Schell, Clint Black’s band, Hank Strzelecki, T.C. Smythe, and John Vandiver.
- Missed opening for Molly Hatchet when he got lost and couldn’t find the venue in time in Beaumont, TX.
- Inadvertently insulted Ray Davies of The Kinks by poking fun at “Lola” after it had been anonymously requested by the lead man who was a good sport and later bought Everitt a beer.
- Considered going to law school.
- When heckled on stage in a Vail, CO nightclub, had a fight with one of the Hawaiian folk duo (either Cecillio or Kapono) in the audience over a girl he did not know.
- Was accosted and literally chased by two Rastafarians after a gig in St. Croix, Virgin Islands for taking a picture of them walking down the street.
- Once played a Marty Robbins song for Marty in a Printers Alley night club in Nashville. He forgot the third verse.
- Spent six weeks on a banana plantation on Kauai.
- Almost drowned while surfing alone on Kauai. Later DID surf the North Shore of Oahu coached by legendary surfer, Ken Bradshaw.
- Played his first L.A. gig (literally before we checked in to his hotel) at The Improv - (a comedy club) two standing ovations! Go figure.
- Played the Troubadour in L.A.; brought comedian/actor/friend, Tim Thomerson, to open the show. Later, Thomerson opened for us at Fitzgerald’s in Houston, TX.
- Song contest at The Palomino Club in L.A. resulted in controversy. We got the prize money and hauled ass.
- Cut three songs, “Fire Down Inside”, “Rosalie”, and “Morning Always Comes” in an L.A. studio from midnight to dawn on a Sunday. The Eagles had completed vocal tracks for Hotel California there the night before.
- Opened for Townes Van Zandt, Bonnie Raitt, Willis Alan Ramsey, J.J. Cale, Dave Alvin, Jesse Winchester, Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Rusty Wier, Robert Palmer, Warren Zevon, Steve Goodman, Guy Clark, Marcia Ball, Delbert McClinton, Teresa James & the Rhythm Tramps, Lyle Lovett, Asleep at the Wheel, Leon Russell, the Allman Brothers, Danny O’Keefe and Paul Overstreet.
- Was headlining at Fitzgerald’s in Houston when members of Wet Willie, including Jimmy Hall, came on stage and jammed with his band.
- Gurf Morlix, Billy Block, Mark Mallett, Steve Beasley, Scott McGill, Jack Saunders, Steve Allison, Chuck Crow, Michael Hart, Jimmy Don Smith, Gerry Hailer, Jay Taylor, Bill Black, Jerry Chambers, Billie Hughes, Mark McKinnon, Robert Scott Williams, Rick Gordon, Jean Kilborn, Wayne Wilkerson, Tomi Lee Bradley, Bubba Robain, Terry Wilson, and Tony Braunagel have all played in Danny’s bands at one time or another.
- Jammed with Buddy Guy who sat in with his band at Corky’s in Houston, TX
- Was playing with his band one Halloween in Manhattan Beach, CA when, for two songs, all sitting in with us, were Billy Payne (Little Feat) on piano, Tim Bogert (Vanilla Fudge) on bass and Robbin Ford on guitar.
- Drove boxing promoter Don King to his hotel from the airport in Puerto Rico.
- Once got his rear end pinched by Elton John’s manager at a Malibu party where he was first introduced to international singing star Demis Russos.
- Was asked to audition for the lead singer spot with Wishbone Ash.
- Sold t-shirts on a U.S. tour for Eric Burdon who later cut three of his songs with the original reunited Animals.
- Has played on stage with Vince Bell, Gordy Quist, Tom Faulkner, Bob Livingston, Connie Mims, Mark Beets, Robert Frith, Susan Gibson, Jack Bruno, Graham Weber, Derek Arambaru, Alan Haynes, Steve Snyder, Hank Woji, Beth Wood, Lee Roy Parnell, Selia Qynn, Bud Bierhaus, Janis Ian, Ray Younkin, Igy Vaughn, Ernie Wells, Karl Van Kyle, Rankin Peters, Jimmy Raycraft, Joe Gavito, Pure Prairie League, Bob Bourgoin, Smokey Wilson, Brian Kalinec, Ken Gaines, Buck Jones, John Herron, Billy Watts, Tommy Dardar, Gary P. Nunn, Tamara Champlin, Red Young, and Stephen Bruton.
- Was mistaken for Lee Greenwood by restaurant staff in a small Texas town and had to “escape” through a side door.
- Was mistaken for Paul English by a jazz groupie in Houston. The converse has happened to Paul.
- Was mistaken for Bill Murray by a movie star groupie in Hollywood. Unknown if the converse ever happened to Billy.
- Picked up hitchhiker, poet/psychic/songwriter, Charles John Quarto in L.A. Twenty years later became his business manager in Nashville.
